Teacher Certification Program Home According to the Florida Department of Education, our state is projected to
hire 25,000-35,000 teachers per year over the next 3 to 5 years. Yet, the number
of graduates from our colleges of education in Florida is estimated at about
6,000 per year. To help address this emerging need for teachers, Lake Sumter
Community College and other Florida community colleges have established an
Educator Preparation Institute to offer programs that support teacher certification
and on-going professional development opportunities. Lake-Sumter's Teacher Certification Program is a competency-based accelerated option for individuals with solid academic skills who hold non-education bachelor's degrees. The 7-month intense program includes on-line and traditional instruction in Florida Educator Accomplished Practices. Students attend weekend sessions, Friday nights 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,with additional work online throughout the week, to prepare for the challenge of teaching in the K-12 system. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
