Hello Potential Students,
This is a hybrid section of Microcomputer Applications (CGS 1530), and the syllabus and course calendar will be available on my website (www.lscc.edu/faculty/sabre_smith) one month before class begins. It’s your responsibility to review it and make sure you can attend our class meetings. Work and lack of child care are not acceptable excuses for missing class. We will be meeting on the first day of class. We’ll be going over vital information during this first meeting, and attendance during this and all other times we are scheduled to meet will be a part of your grade!
Please be sure to bring your textbook and a USB drive (with at least 1 GB free space) on the first day. To see the textbook info, including the ISBN, click your browser’s back button, and then click the ‘Textbook Information’ link for this course. If you are ordering your book online, you need to ensure it arrives before class begins. Order early or choose rush shipping, as you’ll need your book for assignments the first week of class. Not having your book will not be a valid excuse for late assignments.
The purpose of this course is to familiarize you with the Microsoft Office suite of software (word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation applications), but sometimes students confuse this class with an introductory computer skills course. This course is designed for people who are familiar with computers and who already have basic computer skills including knowledge of when to click versus double-click, when to use the left and right mouse buttons, how to select text and icons, how to click and drag, and how to surf the web.
If you don’t yet have these skills, I strongly suggest first learning the basics through free classes offered at the Lake county libraries and then enrolling in a seated section of the class for more face-to-face instruction. Otherwise, it will be like trying to learn algebra before arithmetic, and you will need to schedule plenty of time to get help from the tutors in the Learning Center.
Access to a computer system which meets the minimum specifications for Blackboard access is necessary. Please visit http://www.lscc.edu/dl/Pages/default.aspx for minimum computer requirements and answers to questions you may have about using Blackboard. Access to Windows 7 and Windows-based Microsoft Office 2010 (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) will be required to complete assignments throughout this course. Otherwise, you’ll need to make arrangements to use the computers in the LSSC computer labs, learning centers, or libraries.
Kind regards,
Ms. Smith
