Academic Probation and Suspension FAQ
What is Academic Probation?
Students whose status changes to Academic Probation have attempted seven (7) or more college credits’ with less than a 2.0 all college Grade Point Average (excluding college preparatory courses). Continued probation will occur when the student earns a minimum 2.0 term GPA and the all college GPA remains below a 2.0.
What is Suspension?
Students will progress to suspension for one semester if the term and all college GPA fall below a 2.0. Students who return after suspension will have their academic status changed to continued probation. Students suspended again will be academically dismissed for a period of one calendar year if the all college GPA falls below a 2.0.
Can I still take classes while my status is probationary? Yes, but you may be limited to (6) credit hours or less. Students whose status changes to probation will need to meet with an advisor in person before they can register.
How do I appeal the limit of credit hours I can take during my probationary status or suspension? Should I appeal it?
Students may be limited to only (6) credit hours or less until their academic status is restored to good standing. You are encouraged to appeal if your feel your probation or suspension status occurred because of unusual circumstances, such as injury, illness, military service, changes in condition of employment, or death of an immediate family member, or you may need full time status for health insurance eligibility. You will be required to provide a detailed written explanation of the circumstances that affected your progress and/or supply supporting documentation when applicable.
*Remember if you are on probation or suspension from Admissions and Financial Aid, you must submit two separate appeals.
Should I repeat a course for grade forgiveness?
Yes, repeating a course where a D or lower grade was earned is the quickest way to increase your Grade Point Average. Be warned that only the newest grade is averaged in the Grade Point Average; therefore, if you earn an F when trying to forgive a D – only the F will be factored in the Grade Point Average.
Can I repeat any course for grade forgiveness?
No, courses with a grade of A, B, C, S, and P cannot be retaken. Courses having the same course number or course content (if transferred from another accredited institution) can be retaken for grade forgiveness.
If I graduate, can I still take classes for grade forgiveness?
Once your AA degree is sealed and conferred, you can no longer retake a course for grade forgiveness, but you can repeat courses at Lake-Sumter Community College where a D or lower was earned if you have already been conferred an AS or AAS degree.
How soon should I repeat it?
Talk to an advisor. In some cases it is better to take courses that interest you and /or are “light” in order to increase your confidence and GPA more quickly. (Note: that college preparatory courses must be repeated within two semesters, but do not effect Grade Point Average).
The course I just failed was a prerequisite to a course I want to take this semester. I’ve advanced registered, what should I do?
You must check your LOIS access as soon as grades are posted and drop and/or add if necessary.
Should I change my major?
Talk to an advisor. If you transfer to a university program, is the program limited access? If it is a pre professional program, does it require a certain grade point average in pre requisite courses? All students should have a back up plan and program – do you?
How do I change my major?
Complete the program change form in the Admissions Office.
I’m not a full time student, how am I on probation?
Lake-Sumter Community College makes no distinction between full or part-time status for probation or suspension.
How do I know my course was forgiven in LOIS?
Check with Admissions. It may be necessary to submit a Grade Forgiveness form once the course is completed and the grade received.
Can I graduate with a GPA below 2.0?
No. Students must earn a 2.0 all college grade point average as well as a 2.0 Lake-Sumter Community College grade point average.
Can I take online courses?
Yes, but speak with an Advisor before signing up for an online course while you are attempting to restore your GPA to good standing.
If I’m in a limited access program such as Nursing, will I be removed from the program if I’m on probation?
Once you’re accepted into the program – you must maintain an 80 average in all of your nursing classes and Satisfactory in all of your clinical classes. Failure to do so in any class results in dismissal from the program. Otherwise, GPA’s are not re-calculated until graduation.
I don’t think the instructor gave me the right grade. What can I do?
Contact the instructor. A procedure is in place for students who want to appeal a grade.
I am a dual enrollment student, can I sill attend college on probation?
Dual enrollment students MUST maintain a LSCC cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in order to maintain their eligibility for the program. Student who fail or withdraw from a course cannot repeat that course again under the dual enrollment program. For further questions, please contact the Dual Enrollment Manager.
