A Campus Unknown: the Mysterious Campus in Sumter County

Most LSCC students know that the Lake-Sumter Community College has a campus in Sumter County. However, many students probably don’t know much about said campus.
The Sumter campus, which was opened in 1995, is located on County Road 526 E. in Sumterville. That’s about a 35 minute drive from the Leesburg campus.
It’s quite a bit smaller than the Leesburg campus. However, Tanya Harris-Rocker, the Manager of Sumter Student Services, says that its size is a benefit to students. “We get to know the students better,” she said about the interaction between professors and students.
Miranda O’Hern is a dual-enrollment student taking her third semester of classes at the Sumter campus. She also takes a class at the Leesburg campus. She says she doesn’t mind the size of the campus and that it’s just as good as the Leesburg campus.
According to Harris-Rocker, the campus has 300-350 students currently taking classes there this semester. It is used by more than just LSCC students, though. Its facilities are also used to help train firefighter and linemen (as in power lines) for the cities of Leesburg and Bushnell.
There is also an agreement between the school and SECO Energy electric company to allow its employees to train there. This emphasizes a point Harris-Rocker made about the campus being interactive with the surrounding communities.
Other facilities at the school include what LSCC students have come to expect of their campuses: a science lab, computer lab, student center (with foosball and ping pong tables and vending machines), and a bookstore.
Tutoring and computer assisted instruction are offered in the library for both math and english.
For students who wish to take classes at the Sumter Campus in the future but don’t know how to get there, detailed instructions are available under the “Campus Locations” tab on the left side of the LSCC website homepage.
For more information about the campus, students can contact the administrative offices at (352)-568-0001. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
