Lake-Sumter Student-Athletes participate in Champions Lead, Leaders Read Program
At total of 32 student-athletes from Lake Sumter Community College (Fla.) participated in the "Champions Lead, Leaders Read" initiative the week of Jan. 24-28. The project was part of Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! and the Florida Department of Education's Just Read, Florida! Office. Lake Sumter was one of many community partners including, private organizations and state agencies that joined forces in support of literacy across our state.
"Celebrate literacy week was a huge success," said LSCC athletic director Mike Matulia. "This may have been the greatest accomplishment that our program has had in the last few years. The 'Champions That Read' slogan was perfect for our student-athletes and the championship attitudes that they presented to the 37 classrooms that they visited."
The Florida Department of Education and the Just Read, Florida! Office are focused on making the week of Jan. 24-28, 2011, a week of celebration and recognition. "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!" is an opportunity to promote literacy throughout the state by raising awareness of literacy and challenging students to become "Champions that Read." There are exciting events taking place in school districts, local programs and projects offered by the DOE all year round and through Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! partners, districts agencies and organizations can all champion the same cause. "Champions Read, Readers Lead," is our effort to promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.
