College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) Requirements

Attention Students!
Effective July 1, 2009, the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) will no longer be administered. Recent Florida legislation, Senate Bill 1676, repealed the use of the CLAST to measure the College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) set and as a degree requirement for those undergraduates seeking associate in arts (AA), bachelor of arts (BA), or bachelor of science (BS) degrees in Florida’s public colleges and universities. However, AA degree-seeking students must meet the current College-Level Academic Skills exemptions in order to graduate (the exemptions include earning a 2.5 GPA in 6 credits of specific Gordon Rule courses, or achieving the requisite scores on the SAT or ACT. All scores earned on the CLAST prior to July 1, 2009, will still be valid.

Students who still need to meet CLAS requirements after July 1, 2009, will still have opportunities other than the CLAST exam to do so.

NOTE: Other possible tests to fulfill this requirement may be available for graduating students. Please make an appointment to meet with a Lake-Sumter Community College Academic & Career Advisor as soon as possible.

If the ACT or SAT is needed, please register very early, as the local sites fill up quickly.

Statutory Requirements for Associate in Arts and Baccalaureate Degrees

During the 2009 legislative session, the Legislature repealed section 1008.29, Florida Statutes, relating to the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) and eliminated funding for the test.  As of July 1, 2009, students will no longer be required to take the CLAST.  Concomitant with repealing section 1008.29, F.S., the Legislature amended section 1007.25(12), Florida Statutes.

As amended, the statute now requires students to achieve a score that meets or exceeds a minimum score on a nationally standardized examination, as established by the State Board of Education in conjunction with the Board of Governors.”

Alternatively, to exempt the requirement, students must “achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, on a 4.0 scale, in postsecondary-level coursework identified by the State Board of Education in conjunction with the Board of Governors.”

BOG Regulation 6.017 – Criteria for Awarding the Baccalaureate Degree – currently requires all students who do not receive a waiver to pass the four subtests of the CLAST or to demonstrate the specified proficiencies using options from the list below.
