Lake-Sumter Community College to Observe African American History Month

Leesburg, FL - During the month of February, in observation of African American History Month, Lake-Sumter Community College will be hosting The Annual Young African American Artists exhibit, in the Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center Gallery. Middle school and high school African American students from Lake and Sumter Counties will have their work judged. Cash prizes will be awarded during a Reception held in their honor, on Monday, February 11. The public is invited to the Gallery exhibit and to the free reception, to be held between 4:30 and 6:30 pm, in the Convocation Center. There will also be entertainment and refreshments.

Following the Artists Reception, at 7:30 pm, there will be a musical performance of "Mahalia Jackson: The Woman and Her Music". Performed by singer Sharon Scott, the program is described as a humorous, sensitive and accurate look at the personal and professional life of the famous singer, often called the "Queen of Gospel". Tickets for the Paul P. Williams Fine Arts Auditorium concert may be purchased in advance by calling 365-3506, or at the door for $10 for adults, $5 for students, or $25 for a family of up to four persons.

Also, on the month's agenda is The African American Heritage Program, to be held on Friday, February 8, at 6 pm, in the Paul P. Williams Fine Arts Center Auditorium. This free inter-faith program will feature Lake and Sumter County educators and community leaders. Guest speaker will be Christyne Hamilton, former Johnson Junior College executive secretary and bookkeeper, who is now Vice President of Administration and Business Services at Seminole Community College. In 1965, Lake-Sumter Junior College merged with Johnson Junior College, named in honor of John Wesley Johnson, a dedicated educator. During the evening, author and retired educator Bettye Stevens Coney, will present a special tribute to his daughter Alice Johnson. Other program participants will include: T.H. Poole, Sr., local, state and national activist; Ray Gilley, President of the Economic Development Council; and Jennifer Hill, Lake County Commissioner. For additional information call 365-3506.
