In the News... Lake-Sumter Community College Students Earn Academic Honors
LEESBURG - Six Lake-Sumter Community College students were awarded memberships on the All-USA Academic Team and the All-Florida Academic Team. Colleges are invited to submit two nominees, based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community, from each of its campuses. Sumter Campus Deborah Barnes and Jacqueline Keough, Leesburg Campus Richard Billings and Deborah Burlington, and South Lake Campus Erin Freehling and Lisbeth Jankuhn were selected to represent LSCC. Students nominated to the All-USA Academic Team are automatically named to the All-State Academic Teams. Jacqueline Keough had the added honor of being one of 30 Florida students ranked in states First Team. This selection was based on the scoring of her application by the national judges. "I want to congratulate this outstanding group of Florida students on being named to the 2003 All-Florida Academic Team," said Gov. Jeb Bush. "Each one of these students has demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence that will truly pay dividends for the rest of their lives. Their achievements serve as testament to the strength of Florida's Community College System.
The LSCC Team traveled to Tallahassee for a series of events on March 26 and 27, including a visit to the Legislature and a special awards luncheon to highlight their achievements. The Lake-Sumter Community College District Board of Trustees will recognize the LSCC students during its April 16th meeting, on the Sumter Campus. The Academic Team programs are sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (the international honor society for two-year colleges), the American Association of Community Colleges, the Florida Division of Community Colleges, and USA Today. |
