Lake-Sumter Community College to Honor Graduates

Leesburg - Two hundred and eighty-nine graduates will earn their diplomas and certificates from Lake-Sumter Community College on May 9, at 7 pm. With over 215 participating in LSCCs 40th Annual Commencement Ceremony, it will be the largest graduating processional in the colleges history. Friends and family, as well as LSCC faculty and staff will gather in the Leesburg Campus Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center to cheer on the accomplishments of these hard-working students. Stephen Kelvin Jacob earned the honor of being selected the 2003 Student Commencement Speaker. He will be introduced by senior faculty member John Rata. The Presidents Award, which is based on leadership, service and scholarship will be a surprise announcement, and Academic Excellence Awards will be presented to the students with the highest grade point averages. Another great accomplishment is that the six dual enrollment students will be awarded their two-year LSCC degrees and their high school diplomas in the same month.

This years Guest Commencement Speaker will be Julia L. Johnson. As a member of the Florida State Board of Education, she is responsible for the implementation of a seamless educational system for grades K-20. An advocate of innovative technology in the classroom to empower teachers and students, she has served as Chairman of the Florida Public Service Commission. Ms. Johnson is a graduate the University of Florida and the University of Florida College of Law.
