In the News... Lake-Sumter Community College Student Presented Governors Points of Light Award
LEESBURG - Ashley Michelle Berry, a sophomore nursing student at Lake-Sumter Community College, was singled out during the March 30th Capital-for-a-Day event in Leesburg, when she was personally recognized by Governor Jeb Bush. He presented her the prestigious Points of Light Award, which honors Floridians who demonstrate exemplary service to their communities. She was also recognized the same day by Floridas Commissioner of Education Jim Horne and Lake-Sumter Community College President Dr. Charles Mojock, during a special meeting held at the college for area educators.
She also works with Pastor Ken Scrubbs, at the First Baptist Church of Leesburg, in its weekend ministry of mentoring 250 at-risk students. He adds, Ashleys a fine example in the African American community. She stands out with a boldness for family, spirituality, education and community. The Governors Points of Light Award is sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. A panel of judges, comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service, evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the governor. Volunteer Florida Foundation administers the award. |
