Ms. Berry donates her time four days a week to mentor thirty at-risk middle school students, and to coordinate and maintain the Governors Mentoring Initiative program at six Lake County elementary schools. Through Ashleys mentoring efforts, many parents of at-risk students are becoming more involved in their childrens education, said Governor Bush. Ashleys spirit to help others will inspire other young adults to get more involved in their community. Ashleys recruiting efforts and dedication has helped the program to expand to nearly 660 students.

She also works with Pastor Ken Scrubbs, at the First Baptist Church of Leesburg, in its weekend ministry of mentoring 250 at-risk students. He adds, Ashleys a fine example in the African American community. She stands out with a boldness for family, spirituality, education and community.

The Governors Points of Light Award is sponsored by Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. A panel of judges, comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service, evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the governor. Volunteer Florida Foundation administers the award.
