Lake-Sumter Community College to Honor Graduates

LEESBURG - Over 170 of the 276 graduates will be participating in Lake-Sumter Community Colleges 41st Annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 7, at 7 pm. It will be the second largest graduating processional in the colleges history. Friends and family, as well as LSCC faculty and staff, will gather in the Leesburg Campus Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center to cheer on the accomplishments of these hard-working students.

After being selected through an audition process, Brenna Broadway earned the honor of being the 2004 Student Commencement Speaker. This years Guest Commencement Speaker will be Florida Representative Carey Baker (R.-District 25), who attended LSCC in the early 1980s. Academic Excellence Awards will be presented to the student(s) with the highest grade point average, while the Presidents Award, based on leadership, service and scholarship, is a traditional surprise announcement. Adding to the significance of this years Commencement will be the awarding of the professions symbolic pin to each of the 2004 graduates of LSCCs School of Nursing. Another impressive accomplishment of the Class of 2004 is that eight of the future LSCC alumni are dual-enrollment participants. These Lake and Sumter County students will earn their Associate in Arts degrees (the first two years of a four-year degree) the same month they are awarded their high school diplomas. This impressive accomplishment was achieved by: Stephen Lee Sorley of Christian Home and Bible; Angela S. Harvey and Allison M. Valley of Eustis High School; Leesburg High Schools Sarah Dell Merritt and Mary Jo Elisabeth Shoop; South Sumter High Schools Kamia-Alma Emmanuel Mwango and Larry L. Wilkinson; and DeAnne Kristin Fanta of Tavares High School.

Due to the large number of graduates, LSCC has had to restrict Commencement attendance, and has issued tickets to graduates to distribute as they choose. Regretfully, due to safety regulations, only those holding tickets will be admitted into the Convocation Center. Seating is not reserved, so it is suggested that you arrive early for the best seating. Doors will open at 5:30 pm.
