In the News... Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend Celebration LEESBURG - A Unity Breakfast will initiate the weekend activities in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday on January 19. Vics Embers will host the breakfast gathering on January 16 from 7:30 until 9:30 am. The Breakfasts speaker will be Edward Dixon, a Gadsden County commissioner. Ecumenical Services will be held January 18, at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 1012 W. Line Street, Leesburg, from 6 until 7:30 pm. New to this years activities will be the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Event on January 19. Sponsored by Lake-Sumter Community College, the event will start at 9 am in the Leesburg Campus Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center. The general assembly will feature music, messages from local dignitaries, a dance performance by the Citadel of Hope Dance Group, and recognition of local Unsung Heroes of the civil rights movement. At 10:30 am, children can enjoy fun games, while parents talk with LSCC representatives about educational opportunities. A casual lunch will start at 11:30 am, featuring musical entertainment, followed by speaker Albert Larry, Eustis Middle School principal. Student winners of the essay, oratorical, art and skit / theatrical competitions will be announced and awarded cash prizes and certificates for their entries starting at 12:45 pm.
