In the News... Area High School Students To Participate in Unique Science Program at Lake-Sumter Community College LEESBURG - Lake-Sumter Community College was one of only nine Florida universities and colleges awarded grants through the Governors 2004 Summer Program for Gifted and High-Achieving Students, and the only Central Florida community college. The program submission titled Outbreaks and Public Health in the 21st Century was the brain child of LSCCs Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy Instructor Dr. Keti Venovski, who initiated the grant proposal ultimately selected by the Governors office. Over twenty 9-12th grade Lake and Sumter County students have been accepted into the intense three-week educational camp. Due to grant funding, each will receive this educational opportunity at no cost. I chose the topic of the course hoping to attract talented young students who might become interested in bioscience, said Dr. Venovski. Hopefully, they will study it further in college and choose it as a career. Coping with outbreaks requires a high level of skill and knowledge, and we can only have that by recruiting young talented students at an early stage of their education process. Starting July 5 on LSCCs South Lake Campus, the program will offer participants a look at the world of science, public health and homeland security. Experiments, research and a trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta will provide students with a broad foundation about pathogens, outbreaks and the social impact of public health issues, added Dr. Venovski. There will also be lectures featuring guest speakers including Floridas Department of Health Secretary Dr. John Agwunobi. |
