Area Hospitals Expand Their Support of Lake-Sumter Community College's Nursing Program

LEESBURG - The shortage of licensed nurses is a national problem, and one profoundly effecting Lake County. Lake-Sumter Community College's highly-respected nursing program has proven to be an invaluable resource in educating area healthcare professionals.

The impact of the this nursing program was once again acknowledged during the college's June 15 District Board of Trustees meeting. Representatives from the four Lake County hospitals signed an agreement that each will contribute an additional $22,000 to support the expansion LSCC's Nursing School during 2004-2005.

Florida Hospital Waterman, Leesburg Regional Medical Center, South Lake Hospital, and The Villages Regional Hospital had already pledged $450,000 in May of 2001 to expand the program by 36 students, over a five year period. This recent pledge will allow the college to admit an additional twelve students this coming year. Admission into LSCC's Nursing School is limited due to the fact that there is a very low student-to-instructor ratio, especially in the clinical classes.
