Graduates Academic Accomplishments Are Highlight of Lake-Sumter Community College Commencement

LEESBURG - Two hundred and seventy-six graduates are now members of Lake-Sumter Community Colleges Graduating Class of 2004. Hundreds of families, friends and LSCC personnel attended the 41st Annual Commencement Ceremony, last Friday, May 7, to acknowledge and celebrate the many accomplishments of LSCC students.

Mother of four teenage sons, Brenna Broadway was the 2004 Student Commencement Speaker and addressed her personal experiences during her speech The Challenges of Non-Traditional Students. Representative Carey Baker (R-Dist. 25), who attended LSCC in the early 1980s, was this years guest speaker.

Lake-Sumter Community Colleges graduates are consistently in the top ten percent of the most academically-successful students graduating from four-year universities. The Class of 2004 will certainly validate this state-wide reputation. Seven graduates were recognized for earning perfect 4.0 grade point averages. For this accomplishment Krystal Bedard, Mel Walter Blakeslee, Chrissie Anne Entz, Angela S. Harvey, Ashleigh Ogden Rice, Mary Jo Elisabeth Shoop and Stephen Lee Sorley were presented Academic Excellence Awards. Krystal Bedard, of Grand Island, was also singled out to receive the Presidents Award, which is given to one student for leadership, service and scholarship. Krystal, who plans to study pre-med at Stetson University, not only achieved a 4.0 GPA, but was a Student Government Association Vice President, a student Ambassador, Phi Theta Kappa academic honorary officer, member of LSCCs Brain Bowl team, the All-USA and All-Florida Academic teams, and a mentor and tutor for other students. During her spare time, shes an accomplished ballroom dancer and won first place during this years LSCC Talent Show.

Other super-students include eight dual-enrollment graduates who earned both their LSCC Associate in Arts degrees and their high school diplomas simultaneouslythree with 4.0 GPAs. They are: DeAnne Kristin Fanta, Angela S. Harvey, Sarah Dell Merritt, Mary Jo Elisabeth Shoop, Stephen Lee Sorley, Kamia-Alma Emmanuel Mwango, Larry L. Wilkinson and Allison M. Valley.

The thirty-one students earning Summa Cum Laude honors after accruing 3.80-4.0 GPAs were: Krystal Bedard, Valerie Lynne Bisconti, Mel Walter Blakeslee, Laura Kay Brown, Randy Burress, Lisa Marie Campbell-Arner, Sandra Gail Cook, Jason Lucas Custer, Chrissie Anne Entz, Tammy S. Frank von Frankenstein, Suzanne Mary Hachey, Katherine Borchers Hartman, Angela S. Harvey, Elisabeth Cady Hill, Joshua Ryan Johnson, Angela Lynn Kerkvliet, Adena V. Lusk, Kamia-Alma Mwango, Joy M. Philpot, Jennifer Kay Reinertsen, Ashleigh Ogden Rice, Morgan Wiley Rickerson, Irma Sakalys Rodriguez, Jennifer A. Rose, John Howard Seybert, Mary Jo Elisabeth Shoop, Sabre E. Smith, Stephen Lee Sorley, Christina Joy Symonds, Kelly Marie Webb and Timothy David Welton. Twenty-nine Magna Cum Laude (3.60-3.79 GPA) graduates included: Kimberly Ann Aldrich, Jessica Leigh Beard, Melanie Dana Blais, Lauren Brothers, Gabriel Paul Burroughs, Victoria Lynn Carroll, Leita L. Crabtree, Cristina Marie Crawford, DeAnne Kristin Fanta, Kayli Elizabeth Hoornstra, Amber M.
