In the News... Unique Science Program for High School Students Will be a Summer Camp at Lake-Sumter Community College LEESBURG - Only nine of Floridas universities and community colleges were awarded grants through the Governors 2004 Summer Program for Gifted and High-Achieving Students. Lake-Sumter Community College was one of five community colleges to receive the grant, and the only one in the Central Florida area. The purpose of the Governors Summer Program is to provide an opportunity for outstanding students, entering the 9-12 grades, to utilize higher education resources not available in high schools. Outbreaks and Public Health in the 21st Century is the program proposal submitted by LSCC and selected by the Governors office. This public health based science camp was developed by LSCCs Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy Instructor Dr. Keti Venovski. When asked why this program interested her, Dr. Venovski replied, I wanted to apply for the state grant for several reasons. In choosing the topic of the course, I am hoping to attract talented young students, who by participating in the summer course, would become interested in bioscience, study it further in college, and choose it as a career. Coping with outbreaks requires a high level of skill and knowledge, and we can only have that by recruiting young talented students at an early stage of their education process." The Science Camp is to be held Mondays through Fridays, starting July 5 and continuing through July 23, from 9 am until 1 pm, on the South Lake Campus, in Clermont. The program is free to those who qualify. Participants will enter the world of science, public health and homeland security, added Dr. Venovski. Experiments, research, lectures, and a trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta will provide students with a broad foundation about pathogens, outbreaks and the social impact of public health issues. Upon successful completion of this intense three-week course, participants may earn three college credits. Class size is limited to only 25 students, so apply now! Interested students must submit a completed Summer Grant Application Form. To have this Form sent to you, email Dr. Venovski at : venovskk@lscc.edu. Application deadline is May 28. Accepted candidates will be personally contacted regarding registration details.
