Lake-Sumter Community College Announces New Computer Information Technology Degree
LEESBURG - Debuting this fall term at Lake-Sumter Community College will be a
new Computer Information Administrator Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. The
development of this new program is a result of an extensive two-year study into
the skill preferences of information technology employers, which drew from a
large body of nationwide data that had been acquired by the U.S. Department of
Commerce. Another important resource was regional data from surveys and
workshops held with Central Florida leaders within the information technology
industry.
The two-year degree is designed to prepare students for employment in a variety
of computer positions in business, industry and government. The program is
unique in that it not only provides students with technical training in the
installation, configuration and maintenance of a wide range of technologies
within local-area and wide-area networks, but also with foundational knowledge
in business and interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in the modern
workplace. Graduates will have a well-rounded education, contributing to their
future advancement in seeking a higher-level degree, such as a UCF Bachelors
degree in Information Systems Technology, as well as positioning them for
leadership roles within the information technology industry.
LSCC thanks the volunteers on this programs advisory committee for their hard
work. Comments from its members include:
LSCC has a history of producing graduates with strong technical skills. This
new program takes that a step further, by incorporating interpersonal skills and
business acumen into curriculum. This is a very strong educational package.
Brent Holladay, Chief Deputy, Information Resources, Lake County Clerk of Court
The broad technical scope of the program will provide a wide range of skills
needed by any size of organization, from small to international. Jimmy Green,
Sumter County School Board
A successful member of the information technology workforce must not only have
strong technical skills, but also the ability to communicate effectively with
customers; organize projects and teams; and have logical thought processes for
troubleshooting difficult problems. The program will prepare students for these
challenges. It also provides an excellent foundation for continuing education.
Nancy Vester, Vice-President and CIO, Leesburg Regional Medical Center
I think the best part of this degree is the general scope of the education. I
could take a person from this program and fit them just about anywhere in my
organization. Don Campbell, CIO, Lassiter-Ware Insurance
