Lake-Sumter Community College To Offer Class on the History of American Intelligence

LEESBURG - The brave (but not always successful) efforts of American spies throughout our history will be the topic of Lake-Sumter Community Colleges latest Continuing Education history course titled American Intelligence from 1770 to the Present. You can expect more than a history lesson though, since course instructor Frederick Wettering is a 36-year veteran and former senior officer of the CIA. The non-credit class begins on October 6 and meets on consecutive Wednesdays through November 3, from 4:15 until 6:15 pm on the Leesburg Campus. Starting with the exploits of Nathan Hale, George Washington and the courageous woman spy 355, the course will review some remarkable cases from all three aspects of intelligence: work-espionage, counterintelligence and covert action. Modern issues such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIAs) ongoing paramilitary role in Afghanistan, and the possible intelligence failure over September 11th and Irags weapons of mass destruction will be discussed, but emphasis will be placed on the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, World War II and the Cold War. Cost of the course is $59. Call 365-3556 to register.
