Lake-Sumter Community College Receives Two SUCCEED Florida Career Education Grants

LEESBURG - Created by the 2005 Florida Legislature to better prepare students for the workforce, the SUCCEED Florida Career Education Grant program awarded $21 million to public and private colleges and universities on August 18. The Legislature set two priorities to build capacity for the states most critical workforce needs, $10 million for nursing and $5 million for teaching. Lake-Sumter Community College had the honor of receiving two of these grants. Its highly-respected nursing program was awarded $417,344 and a grant to establish a new Educator Preparation Institute was funded at $154,151.

We are batting 1000, said LSCC President Charles Mojock. Both of our grant applications were approved, thanks to the hard work of our staff and faculty. LSCC will have the ability to address two critical areas of shortages - nursing and teaching. The nursing grant will encourage enrollment of LPN's and paramedics on a fast track to obtain their nursing degree. When LSCC debuts its Educator Preparation Institute (EPI), people with Bachelors degrees who want to teach will be able to obtain their teaching certificate right here.

Lt. Governor Toni Jennings and Department of Education Commissioner John L. Winn announced the recipients of the first-ever SUCEED Florida Career Education Grants at a press conference following the Enterprise Florida Board meeting in Fort Lauderdale. Career education is important for successful economic development, said Lt. Governor Jennings. A highly-qualified, trained workforce attracts industries and jobs." Commissioner Winn unveiled his new plan to expand career academics in high schools, align career education with industry standards and workforce demands, and expand options for students to continue their education and enter the workplace.

Students can start their studies toward a nursing degree and other career-training programs when fall classes start August 23. Online registration continues through August 22 at www.lscc.edu.
