Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Activities
Planned
LEESBURG - Dec. 9, 2005 - Advancing the Dream is this years theme for the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday events. The activities have expanded into two
weekends, with the first kicking off with the annual CommUNITY Breakfast on
January 6, at the Leesburg Community Center. Starting at 7:30 a.m., the
programs guest speaker will be Superintendent of Sumter District Schools
Richard Shirley. Contributions are acceptable.
The following evening (January 7) the play The Meeting will be presented at 6
p.m., on Lake-Sumter Community College Leesburg Campus Paul P. Williams Fine
Arts Center Auditorium. Produced by Peoples Theatre, Inc., The Meeting is a
fascinating account of a fictitious meeting between Dr. King and Malcolm X .
Tickets are $5 and are available at Hagins Barber Shop, Wind of Soul
Restaurant, Dairy Ranch Ice Cream, and at the door. The presentation is
sponsored in part by the Lake County Cultural Affairs Council and the Board of
Sumter County Commissioners.
The following weekend get an energetic start with the 5K Adult or the 1K Kiddie
Run For Your Dream on January 14. The race will take place around Leesburgs
Silver Lake and will start with a 7 a.m. congregation in LSCCs Everett A. Kelly
Convocation Center Gym. Pre-registration is $10; just print out an application
from LSCCs website at
http://www.lscc.edu/news/mlk/celebration.asp; or register that morning for
$15. Participants will receive a t-shirt, snacks and bottled water. Trophies and
certificates will also be awarded. An Ecumenical Service will be held the
following evening on January 15, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday, at 6
p.m. The service will be hosted by First United Methodist Church, 600 South
Grove Street, in Eustis, and will feature guest speaker Reverend Richard E.
King, pastor of Eustis St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church. Activities
conclude January 16, with an Awards & Recognition Ceremony, at 10 a.m., in
LSCCs Paul P. Williams Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Featured that day will be
the works of middle, high school and Lake-Sumter Community College students
competing in the Third Annual Student Literacy Contest. Cash prizes, trophies
and scholarships will be awarded. The program will also contain memorable
moments that will allow the significance of the remembrance to linger in your
hearts, souls and minds.
The public is cordially invited to all of the events. Holiday activities are
sponsored by: the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Committee of Lake
