LAKE-SUMTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HOST FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP...COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY

LEESBURG (Feb. 8, 2006) - Need Money for College? College Goal Sunday is a one-day event for students who dream of going to college, but need help with the financial aid process. On February 19, Lake-Sumter Community College will be one of the schools throughout the state that will host an event to help students complete financial aid forms accurately and on time. The program will start at 2 p.m., in LSCCs Leesburg Campus Convocation Center, followed by the workshop that will last until 5 p.m. Students who attend will also be eligible for a scholarship drawing.

College Goal Sunday is a state-wide volunteer, charitable effort to assist low-income and first-generation-in-college students with free, expert guidance to complete the universal application, Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA), required to qualify for college financial aid nationwide. Please bring 2005 tax information with you. Additional information is available at www.floridacollegegoal.com, or call (850) 245-0407.

This is the first year that Florida is participating in College Goal Sunday. The initiative began in Indiana in 1989, when it became evident that families were not aware that millions of dollars in financial aid were available and that assistance was needed to complete the required application form. The annual public service event is sponsored by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Administrators, in cooperation with the Indiana Career and Postsecondary Advancement Center and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana. Local co-founders of the Indiana event are Lilly Endowment Inc. and Lumina Foundation for Education, two private foundations with a particular interest in higher education. The program expanded to Arizona in 1997; a similar effort began in Kansas in 1999; and in the past two years, College Goal Sunday initiatives started in Kentucky, Hawaii and California. Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia initiated a pilot project. Financial aid experts, primarily from the states colleges and universities, volunteer their time.
