Lake-Sumter Community College Recognized For
Its Student Outreach Accomplishments
LEESBURG
- The Florida African American Education Alliance selected Lake-Sumter Community
College as one of only four community college finalists recognized for their
support of the Alliances strategic plan to continually improve educational
initiatives benefiting African Americans. LSCCs Educational Talent Search,
Upward Bound and College Reach-Out programs have been tremendously successful in
identifying potential students; then providing them the support and skills
needed to continue their education onto a college or university level.
Keynote speaker Governor Jeb Bush addressed over 800 guests during the
Alliances January 16th Recognition Ceremony at the Doubletree Hotel, as part of
Orlandos Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Annual Birthday Celebration. In addition
to community colleges, which included Lake-Sumter, Indian River, Palm Beach and
Florida Community College at Jacksonville, the Alliance honored Florida
teachers, students, school administrators, businesses, community leaders and
organizations who have demonstrated a commitment to education and service
throughout the year.
A not-for-profit organization, the Florida African American Education Alliance
was created in response to the concern that Florida's communities are not fully
aware of the benefits of the education reforms and are not taking full advantage
of what is available within the education system. Their goal is to raise this
educational awareness and promote opportunities in the advancement of education
for all.
