Early Childhood Education Degrees Offered at Lake-Sumter Community College this Fall
LEESBURG - Pre-kindergarten teacher, childcare provider and development center
director are just some of the careers open to students completing Lake-Sumter
Community Colleges new Early Childhood Development degree programs.
The same high credentials now required for public school pre-kindergarten
programs, are being phased into the group and family childcare industry. LSCCs
Early Childhood Education degrees prepare practitioners to work in high-quality
programs that integrate activities supporting language and reasoning skills for
children from birth through age eight, including those with disabilities and
limited English proficiency. They are also designed to meet state mandates for
the No Child Left Behind, Head Start and Voluntary Preschool programs.
Students can choose either an Associate in Science (A.S.) or Applied Science (A.A.S.)
degree, with a choice of two specializations - Child Development Center
Management and Preschool. The difference in the specializations is the type of
internship and support courses. The general education requirements and the core
courses are basically the same. LSCC continues to offer its two-year Associate
in Arts (A.A.) degree with an Emphasis in Early Childhood Education, as well.
This program completes the first two years of core requirements toward a
four-year Early Childhood Education degree at a state university. Child
Development Associate/Equivalent (CDA/E) Credentials and Advanced Director
Credentials may be earned as part of LSCCs A.A.S. and A.A. degrees, while the
Language Arts for the Young Child course fulfills the Florida Department of
Children and Families literacy training requirements.. Lake Technical students
with CDA/E Credentials, who enroll in the LSCC's Early Childhood Education A.A.S.
and A.A. programs, can be credited up to nine college hours.
New students need to make an appointment with an LSCC advisor during the fall
term application process to discuss these and other career options. Call
365-3574 for an appointment. Open registration for fall term starts August 2,
with classes beginning August 23. Visit LSCCs website at www.lscc.edu to view
the Fall Schedule or to register.
