Lake-Sumter Community College Earns Summer Grant for Second Year
LEESBURG - Lake-Sumter Community College was one of only nine Florida
universities and community colleges to be awarded grants through the Governors
2005 Summer Program for Gifted and High-Achieving Students. This was the second
year that LSCC was selected to participate in the program which provides an
opportunity for outstanding students, entering the 9-12 grades, to utilize
higher education resources not available in high schools.

Emerging Outbreaks and Public Health in the 21st Century...Battle with the
Invisible Enemy was the program proposal submitted by LSCC and selected by the
Governors office. This public-health-based science camp was developed by LSCCs
Microbiology, Physiology and Anatomy Instructor Dr. Keti Venovski. When asked why this program interested her, Dr. Venovski replied, I wanted to apply for
the state grant for several reasons. In choosing the topic of the course, I am
hoping to once again attract talented young students, who by participating in
the summer course, would become interested in bioscience, study it further in
college, and choose it as a career. Coping with outbreaks requires a high level
of skill and knowledge, and we can only have that by recruiting young talented
students at an early stage of their education process.
The science camp started June 27 and continues through July 21, on LSCCs South
Lake Campus, in Clermont. Last summers camp was a tremendous success and
generated a lot of interest among high school students to participate in this
years program. Eighteen area students qualified. Participants enter the world
of science, public health and homeland security, added Dr. Venovski.
Experiments, research, lectures, and a trip to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention in Atlanta will provide students with a broad foundation about
pathogens, outbreaks and the social impact of public health issues.

their June 11 orientation. The program is the brainchild of LSCC Instructor Dr. Keti Venovski (front row, center).
