GRADUATES' ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE HIGHLIGHT OF LAKE-SUMTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
COMMENCEMENT
LEESBURG (May 5, 2006) - Over 200 graduates participated in Lake-Sumter
Community Colleges 43rd Annual Commencement Ceremony, on Friday, May 5.
Hundreds of families, friends and LSCC faculty and staff were there to
acknowledge the impressive Class of 2006.
Prior to being awarded her Associate in Arts degree, Student Commencement
Speaker Linda Karp (photo attached below) spoke to the assembly on the
importance of making the most of lifes experiences. She was selected through a
competitive nomination and audition process. The 46 year old wife, mother and
Howey-in-the-Hills resident plans to continue working toward a Troy State
University Bachelors degree in political science.
Graduates Amber Grayford and Dorothea Norman were recognized for earning perfect
4.0 grade point averages. Each were presented the Academic Excellence Award.
Twenty-two students garnered Summa Cum Laude honors (3.80-4.0 GPA), 28 graduated
Magna Cum Laude (3.60-3.79 GPA), and 38 graduates earned Cum Laude (3.4-3.59
GPA) degrees. Departmental Awards went to: Kellie Adkins, biology; Dafne Ors
Gonzales, business technology; Matthew Miller, computer technology; Amy Rouinfar,
chemistry; Danielle Nemeth, chemistry-freshman; Philip Levingston, criminal
justice; Payal Patel, health careers; John Hicks, mathematics; Megan Chancellor,
nursing; and Beth Hudson, theatre arts.
Always a surprise presentation, the Presidents Award is given to one student
each year for leadership, service and scholarship. It is by far one of the
toughest decisions I make, said Dr. Charles Mojock. There are always so many
deserving students. Graduate Candice Chenoweth (photo attached below), the
fourth LSCC alumni in her family, was selected to receive the 2006 honor. Having
made only one B among scores of As, Candices high grades have earned her a
regular place on the Presidents List, the National Deans List, in the
international honor society Phi Theta Kappa, and inclusion into Whos Who Among
Students in American Junior Colleges. Going to college and playing softball
were my goals through high school, said Chenoweth. She received an athletic
scholarship from LSCC to do just that. Due to her combination of brains and
athletic prowess, other honors include: Florida Community College Activities
Associations All-Academic Team, Suncoast Conferences Academic Team, National
Junior College Athletic Associations Distinguished Academic All-American, and
the 2006 LSCC Female Student Athlete of the Year. Having earned a Lake County
Gator Club University of Florida Transfer Scholarship, Chenoweth plans to pursue
a career in veterinary medicine.
Other super-students included eleven dual-enrollment graduates, who earned
both their LSCC Associate in Arts degrees and their high school diplomas
simultaneously. They are: Brent Balkaran, Elizabeth Bennett, Amber Grayford, Ivy
Grayford, Heather Hilliard Sarah Leaberry, Jasmine Mitchell, Ashley Rehman,
Laura Reinhardt, Lauren Sorley and Cheryl Thompson.
