Lake-Sumter Community College Takes a Native American
Perspective on Thanksgiving
LEESBURG - Nov. 14, 2005 - In honor of Celebrating Native American Heritage
History Month, Lake-Sumter Community College will present a program that takes
a unique look at a popular holiday. Guest lecturer Rod White Eagle Wilson will
discuss many fascinating and historical facts about Thanksgiving, from the
Native American perspective. The public is invited to this free program this
Thursday, November 17, from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m., in the Leesburg Campus Fine
Arts Center Auditorium. The event is sponsored by LSCCs Equity & Diversity
Committee and Student Activities.
Rod White Eagle Wilson, a member of the Wolf Clan of the Cherokee Nation, was
born in California and attended the University of Hawaii where he studied
philosophy and theater arts. Ordained by the Episcopal Church, he served as a
minister to the street people of Honolulu. Wilson and his wife Alexis joined
Youth With A Mission, an international missions organization, where they have
served for the past 29 years. They pioneered projects in Kenya, Africa, which
involved setting up schools, an outpatient clinic, a livestock and agricultural
program and the development of East African Relief Services. He has served as
Dean of the College of Performing Arts at the University for the Nations in Kona,
Hawaii and has taught and traveled to more than 70 nations in Europe, the Middle
East, Africa, Scandinavia, Asia, and the islands of the Pacific. Now residents
of Spearfish, South Dakota, the Wilsons have a vision to see Native Americans
raised up to freely express themselves and worship out of the richness of their
cultural inheritance.
