Bachelors Degree Graduates Can Earn Teaching
Certifications through New Lake-Sumter Community College Program
LEESBURG - If you have a bachelors degree in a field that has not provided the
opportunities or satisfaction you expected; or if you would just like to make a
career change, Lake-Sumter Community College will soon provide the opportunity
to supplement your education to become a state-certified elementary or secondary
school teacher.
With the projected need of up to 35,000 teachers over the next three years, the
Florida Department of Education has approved a program called Educator
Preparation Institutes (EPI). Lake-Sumter Community College will be one of the
state schools participating in this innovative new teacher-education program.
One important component of EPI is the Alternative Teacher Certification. It is
designed for those who have earned a bachelors degree from a
regionally-accredited four-year school, yet have no formal training in
education. Through a seven-course series, degree-holding students will complete
training to prepare them for the certification required to become an teacher in
a K-12 school. EPI classes will start spring term on January 5, however state
documentation is required to participate in the Alternative Teacher Certificate
program. Requests can take weeks to process and enrollment is limited, so it is
important for those who wish to participate in this springs program to start
the application process now.
To find out more about this exciting new career opportunity contact EPI
Coordinator Dr. Diane Edwards at: 435-5048 or e-mail her at:
edwardsd@lscc.edu. An EPI representative
will be at LSCCs table during the Lake Square Malls Career Expo on Wednesday,
October 19th, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and at the South Lake Campus Open House
on Thursday, October 27 from 4 until 7 p.m.
