Area Hospitals Once Again Expand Their Support of
Lake-Sumter Community College's Nursing Program
LEESBURG - The shortage of licensed nurses is a national problem, and one
profoundly effecting Central Florida. Lake-Sumter Community College's
highly-respected nursing program has proven to be such an invaluable resource in
educating area healthcare professionals that the four Lake County area hospitals
have increased their support of the colleges program.
During the September 20th LSCC District Board of Trustees meeting, Florida
Hospital Waterman, Leesburg Regional Medical Center, South Lake Hospital and The
Villages Regional Hospital representatives signed a pledge that each will
contribute an additional $19,500 to fund twelve new seats in LSCCs nursing
program for the 2005-2006 academic year. This is the second time that the Lake
County hospitals supplemented their initial 2001 pledge of $450,000, which
expanded the program by 36 seats over a five year period. They also financially
supported a twelve-seat expansion for the 2004-2005 school year with a $22,200
contribution.
Admission into LSCCs nursing program is limited due to the fact that there is a
very low student-to-instructor ratio, especially in the clinical classes. Each
year, the number of students applying for the program far exceeds the
departments openings or seats. The contributions made by the hospitals enable
LSCC to hire more instructors and add necessary equipment, therefore allowing it
to increase its enrollment.
