Lake-Sumter Community College Program Features Two-Sport
Champion Gene Conley
LEESBURG
- Of all the great American athletes who competed during the 20th century, Gene
Conley accomplished something no one else was able to do. He won championship
rings in two different major professional sports.
"I enjoyed all sports, but especially basketball and baseball. Conley notes in
One of A Kind, a book authored by his wife Kathryn Conley that covers his
impressive career. I played both well enough to excel, but I never had it in my
mind to be a professional athlete.
In the minor leagues, Conley was twice selected the minor league player of the
year by The Sporting News; the only player ever to win the award twice. But his
greatest achievements were yet to come. Conley was a pitcher for the Milwaukee
Braves, when they won the 1957 World Series; then in 1959, 1960 and 1961, he was
a member of the National Basketball Association champion Boston Celtics. He was
one of the greatest athletes of our generation, declared Celtics' legendary coach
Red Auerbach.
Lake-Sumter Community Colleges athletic department will welcome Gene Conley
during its October 24 Sports Leadership Series dinner. The event will be held in
the Leesburg Campus Magnolia Room, starting at 6 p.m. Tickets for the program
and dinner are $25 per person. Companies can reserve a table of eight for
their guests and employees for only $300, as well as receive recognition as
a program sponsor. Individual sponsors can also reserve tables for $160. The
program benefits LSCCs Athletic Scholarship Fund. Seating is limited, so please
make your reservations now by calling 352-323-3645.
