Lake-Sumter Community College Remembers during Patriot Day
Reflection
LEESBURG - Each year, Lake-Sumter Community Colleges Student Activities office
presents a Patriot Day Reflection. Students, staff and faculty gathered this
morning (September 9), at 8:45 a.m., on the lawn of the Leesburg Campus to not
only remember those who lost their lives on 9-11, the day that changed our
nation, but also to reflect on those who are serving our country in the Middle
East.
LSCC Instructor John Rata started the morning with a trumpet
performance of the Star-Spangled Banner and appropriately ended the ceremony
with America the Beautiful. Vice President Jane Miller welcomed those in attendance and introduced Leesburg Campus Student Government
Association Vice President Paul Warren. He announced the start of a two-month
project in which everyone at LSCC can contribute items requested by service
people such as CDs, toiletries and magazines, as well as write a letter sending
best wishes to those serving who might not have family ties.
Lt. John Hoornstra, of the Leesburg Fire Department, poignantly remembered those
firemen, policemen and other rescue personnel who gave or risked their lives in
New York City four years ago, while LSCC student and Marine Corporal J ustin
White gave a touching account of his experience as a member of
one of the first post-9/11 military deployments to the Middle East.
