Early Childhood Education Program

LSCC offers three two-year degree options.  The Associate in Arts Degree with an emphasis in early childhood education is designed for students wishing to continue studies for a bachelors degree.  The Associate in Applied Science & the Associate in Science with specializations in Preschool Curriculum or Child Development Center Management are designed to prepare early childhood practitioners to work in high quality programs to meet the needs of children from birth through age eight.  The degrees were developed to meet the mandates of No Child Left Behind, Head Start, Voluntary Preschool, and to address the need for qualified early childhood teachers.

Every early childhood course includes content that supports all young children, including those with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency. The curriculum integrates language rich activities that support communication and reasoning skills across all content areas, and Preschool Curriculum internships take place in integrated environments under the supervision of certified teachers.

Individual courses may be taken to satisfy Teacher Certification Renewal, CDA/E renewal and/or CDA/E credentials. It is important to recognize that most education courses require field work, which can only be done after a student has been cleared via state and national background checks.

Students entering the program with an earned Child Development Associate/Equivalent Credential may apply for up to nine college credits in the following three 3-credit courses: Introduction to Early Childhood Education; Health, Safety and Nutrition for Young Children; and Preschool Curriculum Internship.   Students entering the program with a Tech Prep Certificate in Paraprofessional Teacher Aide or Early Childhood Education may take an assessment to earn up to six college credits in early childhood education.

Classes are offered on the Leesburg and the South Lake campuses.  Class days and times will vary to accommodate full-time students and students who work full time and take classes during the nights, on weekends, and during mini-semesters over spring and summer break.

Questions regarding early childhood programs or courses should be directed to the Program Manager. If you are an employer with available ECE positions and would like to post your job listings, please see the contact information below.
