Module 1: Defining the Information Need

Websites

Websites
Websites can contain either unique information or information from any of the previous categories. Websites are created by individuals, businesses, governments, schools, organizations, and many others. Since there is so much information on the Web, this makes it one of the most challenging sources to use. Use websites when you need:
  • Up to the minute news and information
  • Research on companies and businesses
  • General medical information
  • Information from local and national governments
  • Multimedia (audio, video, or images)
Strengths:
  • Wide variety of information
  • Information can be brief or in-depth
  • Websites easily allow anyone to publish content
  • Allow global perspectives to be shared
Weaknesses:
  • Information can be brief or in-depth
  • Websites are unstable, content can change or disappear at any time
  • Many websites are commercial in nature, trying to sell products or ideas
