LSCC Nursing Student

LAKE-SUMTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

NURSING DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION

Thank you for your interest in the nursing program at Lake-Sumter Community College.  The program graduated its first class in 1984.  From that time on it has developed and grown to accommodate the ever-increasing demand for health care professionals in the workforce.

Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN, the state licensing exam required to become a registered nurse.  LSCC graduates have traditionally experienced high pass rates on this exam.  As a result the program enjoys an excellent reputation among local employers.

The program is currently accredited by the Florida State Board of Nursing (BON) as well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The program is currently in the application process for the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) accreditation.

The program offers a choice of two tracks for completion.  The Bridge track (54 Credits) is a one year option for students who are currently licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or who are currently certified as paramedics in the state of Florida.  Students who are not LPNs or paramedics will need to complete the two year General track (72 Credits).  Completion of program pre-requisite and nursing courses will culminate in an Associate of Science degree in Nursing.

Theory classes are offered on the Leesburg and the South Lake campuses.  Class days and times will vary as you progress through the program.  In addition there will be on-campus skills lab requirements as well as off-campus clinical requirements that may occur on various days of the week.  Further time will be invested in multi-media lab assignments, completion of care plans, required community service, and student organization activities.

It is important to recognize that the nursing program requires more commitment from you for non-class time requirements than you have encountered in your previous educational experience.

Also please note that students with children must make arrangements for their care at facilities that will accept drop-off by 6:00a.m.on clinical days.

The information contained in this packet is intended to acquaint you with the admission/selection process for the Nursing Department as well as provide supplemental information that may affect your application.  Procedures included herein are subject to change.  The packet is updated on an annual basis.  It is the students responsibility to remain apprised of current information and policy.  Questions regarding college general education issues should be directed to the Admissions Department.
