-Must have earned 6 college credits and maintain a minimum of 6 credit hours
-Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and good standing (according to the LSCC catalog)
-Display leadership qualities at all times
-Able to serve in position for the academic year (August - May)
Selection Process: Complete an application with two letters of recommendation. Once your completed application has been reviewed and your qualifications verified, you will be contacted for an interview. A committee will select the best qualified applicants from the pool. As an officer, you will serve the entire academic year pending completion of the required duties and expectations determined by the SGA Advisor.
Scholarship: SGA Officers are eligible to receive a $600 scholarship (President’s scholarship is $750) each semester. The money comes from Financial Aid and disbursement is determined by a student’s eligibility and meeting the commitments of the position. Dual Enrollment students may not receive scholarship funds.
Service Hours:
Each SGA officer is required to serve four office hours each week for the Fall & Spring terms. These hours are flexible around your work/school schedule and are in addition to scheduled meeting times. Officers must submit a timesheet documenting their hours each semester to their Advisor in order to receive the scholarship. Failure to fulfill the minimum requirement of hours will result in forfeiting the scholarship.
Meetings:
SGA meetings are held weekly at each campus. Once a month the campus SGAs will come together for a college-wide meeting. Officers are required to attend both their campus and the college-wide SGA meetings.
In addition to this, LSCC SGA is involved with the Florida Junior and Community College Student Government Association (FJCCSGA). FJCCSGA holds meetings and conferences throughout the year at member colleges and conference sites across the state. All officers are encouraged to participate in these events as their academic schedule allows.
Attendance: Attending meetings and SGA sponsored events are a requirement for holding an officer position. If you are unable to attend a scheduled meeting or event, it is your responsibility to contact your SGA Advisor and campus SGA Secretary at least three days prior to the event or meeting at least 3 days in advance. Absences with less than 3 days advance notice will be considered unexcused.
Officers will be permitted 3 unexcused absences for the year and still maintain their position. After 2 unexcused absences Officers will be required to meet with their SGA Advisor. In order to qualify for the SGA Officer scholarship, Officers are only permitted 4 absences in total for the year (excused & unexcused). This attendance requirement applies to meetings and SGA-sponsored events. After the 5th absence, Officers will forfeit their scholarship.
Behavior: As an SGA officer, you are a representative of LSCC and the student body. Selection is based on leadership potential or skills. Professionalism is required at all times. Qualities including punctuality, cooperation, dependability, courtesy, diplomacy, neatness, self-respect and integrity are expected. Behavior bringing discredit to the college and/or student body will not be tolerated.
Knowledge:
You are expected to be familiar with college policies, as well as the SGA Constitution and Student Life operating procedures. You must become an expert on these topics. Please be familiar with the college catalog, SGA manual, and other pertinent materials related to SGA at LSCC.
Job Responsibilities:
Each officer serves a unique role in the oversight of the SGA. Officers should be familiar with the particular duties and responsibilities assigned to their position. Each officer must take an active role in ensuring these duties and responsibilities are completed to the best of his or her ability.
Advisor's Role:
Leadership is a learning experience, and your Advisor is there to help you grow and develop knowledge and skills. Please feel free to contact your Advisors in regards to questions, concerns or resources needed as an SGA officer.
Contact: E-mail will be the primary means of communication from the Advisor to you. SGA officers will also have mailboxes located at their campuses. It is your responsibility to make sure you are aware of upcoming events by checking your e-mail and mailbox weekly.
Evaluation:
SGA officers will receive an evaluation each term or semester to assess their job performance. Your SGA Advisor will provide written assessment and meet with each student to help maximize his or her skills as a campus leader.
Separation:
A written resignation should be submitted to the SGA Advisor if a student decides that he or she no longer wishes to continue as an officer. Likewise, if an officer does not fulfill his or her duties successfully after sufficient notice from the Advisor, he or she may be subject to suspension and ultimately termination.
